What to Consider When Laying Taekwondo Mats

When laying Taekwondo mats, pay special attention to the following key aspects to ensure safety and field performance.

Surface Pretreatment: Before laying, ensure the surface is completely flat. Use a laser level to check for an error of no more than 2mm/m. Raised areas should be ground to the specified range using an angle grinder. Depressions exceeding 5mm should be filled with epoxy resin patching material. Floor humidity should be kept below 8%, which can be verified using a humidity meter. Humid conditions can cause the mat to separate from the base layer and even cause mold. During cleaning, use a stiff brush to remove particulate matter, followed by a deep clean with an industrial vacuum cleaner to ensure a dust-free environment.

Jointing Specifications: Jointed mats require specialized connectors to ensure a gap of less than 1.5mm. Six to eight joints per square meter are recommended. Pattern alignment must be accurate to a 3mm tolerance. Positioning templates can be used to assist with installation. If gluing is used, use environmentally friendly glue that complies with EN71-3 standards. The application rate should be controlled at 150-200g/m2. Use a V-shaped scraper for even application to avoid spot buildup and blistering.

Edge Reinforcement: 50mm-wide aluminum alloy beading should be installed around the perimeter of the site, secured with M6 expansion bolts at intervals no greater than 300mm. Corners should be spliced ​​using a 45-degree bevel to ensure tight joints. Areas without beading should be coated with a two-component polyurethane sealant, forming a 3-5mm high curved seal to prevent edge warping.

Acceptance Criteria: After paving is completed, three tests must be performed: flatness inspection using a 2m ruler, with gaps not exceeding 3mm; a load test, observing no deformation under a load of 50kg/m2 for 24 hours; and a coefficient of friction test, with the dry value remaining between 0.5-0.7. Hollow areas should be repaired by drilling and injecting foam sealant. Joints with gaps exceeding the specified limit must be re-joined.

Environmental Adaptability Requirements: The temperature range is 5-40°C, with a relative humidity not exceeding 75%. For construction in low-temperature environments, the mats must be delivered to the site 24 hours in advance to acclimate to the temperature. The mats should be stored away from direct sunlight to prevent UV rays from aging the material.
